なぜこの課題に取り組むか
☆ ハンセン病回復者である理事長の伊波敏男は、ハンセン病発症から現在に至るまで、人々の心の中にある差別や矛盾した社会制度などと闘ってきました。ハンセン病は感染力が弱く、また特効薬が出来たことで、世界的には隔離政策がとられなくなってからも、日本では強制隔離や優生政策に基づいた人権侵害が続きました。ハンセン病回復者は、今でも故郷に帰ることが出来なかったり、匿名で活動をしなければならないなど、差別や偏見は続いています。差別は、ハンセン病に関わらず、社会に多く存在しています。私たちは、伊波敏男の体験を多くの人たちに知ってもらう事を通じて、差別のない社会を実現したいと考えています。
☆ 伊波敏男は中学2年生の時にハンセン病に罹っていたことが判明し隔離されます。当時暮らしていた沖縄にはハンセン病に精通した医師は少なく、その結果、治療開始が遅くなりました。その体験を踏まえて、十分な保健医療体制が整備されていないフィリピン共和国で、医師や看護師などを支援する活動を行っています。
☆ フィリピンでは、十分な食料を確保できない人々がいるため、現地の人たちが自分たちの力で実行できる持続可能な農業や漁業を広める活動の支援を行います。
☆ Toshio Iha, a leprosy survivor himself, has been a stalwart fighter against discrimination and social system contradictions since the onset of his leprosy and up to the present day. Despite the worldwide elimination of isolation policies due to the low infectivity of leprosy and the advent of treatments, human rights abuses rooted in forced isolation and eugenic policies continued to persist in Japan. Discrimination and prejudice endure, as individuals impacted by leprosy are hindered from returning to their homes or coerced into anonymous labor. This discrimination is not confined to leprosy but permeates various facets of society. By disseminating Mr. Toshio Iha's experiences to as many people as possible, our objective is to manifest a discrimination-free society.
☆ Toshio Iha received his leprosy diagnosis during his second year of junior high school, leading to a life of isolation. In Okinawa, his place of residence at the time, there were scarce medical practitioners with familiarity in treating leprosy, causing treatment delays. Drawing upon this personal history, he has dedicated his efforts towards supporting doctors and nurses in the Republic of the Philippines, where a comprehensive medical system is lacking.
☆ Acknowledging the plight of individuals in the Philippines who lack access to sufficient food, he is actively championing endeavors to propagate sustainable agriculture and fisheries practices.
