私たちの取り組む課題
私たちが活動する長崎県諫早市のような地域では、日常的に外国の人と関わる機会が少なく、子どもたちが異文化に触れる機会は限られています。
また、日本では英語を学ぶ環境は整っている一方で、実際に使う場面が少なく、「学んでも話せない」という状況が生まれています。
さらに、「みんなと同じであること」が重視される日本の教育や社会の中で、自分らしさや自由な選択に対して息苦しさを感じる子どもたちも少なくありません。
多様な価値観や生き方に触れる機会が不足していることが、その一因となっています。
一方で、地域や文化の中には、外の視点と出会うことで初めて気づく魅力や価値があります。
私たちは、そうしたまだ引き出されていない可能性が、この地域や子どもたちの中にたくさんあると感じています。
Challenges We Address
In regions like Isahaya City in Nagasaki Prefecture, where our organization is based, opportunities for daily interaction with people from different cultural backgrounds are limited. As a result, children have few chances to experience cultural diversity firsthand.
Although English education is well established in Japan, there are limited opportunities to use the language in real-life situations. This often leads to a common challenge: many people study English for years but lack the confidence to communicate effectively.
Additionally, within Japan’s education system and society, there is a strong emphasis on conformity and harmony. While these values have their strengths, some children feel constrained and find it difficult to express their individuality or make independent choices.
A lack of exposure to diverse perspectives and ways of life contributes to this situation.
At the same time, local communities and cultures hold many unique and valuable qualities that are often taken for granted. When viewed through the eyes of people from other countries, these “ordinary” aspects reveal their true charm and significance.
We believe that there is tremendous untapped potential within this region and its children. Through meaningful cultural exchange, we aim to help bring out these possibilities and inspire a deeper sense of confidence and pride.
なぜこの課題に取り組むか
私たちはこれまでの国際交流活動の中で、子どもたちが大きく変化していく姿を見てきました。
からりんハウスでは、外国の人と出会い、英語を「テストのための教科」ではなく「伝えるための手段」として日常の中で学んでいます。
また、日本とは異なる価値観に触れることで、「こうあるべき」という固定観念にとらわれず、自分自身の選択について考えるきっかけが生まれました。
さらに、自分の文化を紹介する経験は、「当たり前だったもの」に価値があることに気づき、地域や日本への誇りや自己肯定感を育てています。
こうした体験は、教科書では得ることができません。
だからこそ私たちは、日常の中で自然に多様な価値観に触れられる機会をつくることが必要だと考え、この活動に取り組んでいます。
Why We Address These Challenges
Through our international exchange activities, we have witnessed remarkable transformations in the children who participate.
At Coloring House, children meet people from around the world and learn to use English not as a subject for tests, but as a practical tool for communication in their daily lives.
By encountering perspectives and values different from those in Japan, they begin to question fixed ideas about “how things should be” and are encouraged to think about their own choices and paths in life.
Furthermore, the experience of sharing their own culture helps children realize that what once seemed “ordinary” holds unique value. This awareness nurtures a sense of pride in their community and country, as well as strengthens their self-confidence.
These meaningful experiences cannot be gained from textbooks alone.
That is why we believe it is essential to create opportunities where people can naturally engage with diverse perspectives in their everyday lives, and we are committed to fostering these experiences through our activities.
