In eight villages across Zaba District in the Gofa Zone of South Ethiopia, an environmental education project is about to launch—one that aims to protect both the future of children and their communities.
The project will reach 3,698 schoolchildren at the primary and secondary levels, and indirectly benefit around 13,000 people, including their families. So far, the project has included the restoration of seedbeds damaged by flooding and the installation of gabion boxes—stone-filled cages woven from iron wire—used to reinforce riverbanks and unstable slopes for erosion prevention.
In addition, local environmental protection groups have received training, and community-led tree planting initiatives have been carried out.
Starting in April 2025, environmental education classes will begin for children, teaching them how deforestation contributes to natural disasters and helping them explore how they can play a role in building a more sustainable future for their communities.
