SAIDA STONE

A stonemason workshop founded in 1902 in the small satoyama village of Hoki, Sogabe Town, Kameoka City, Kyoto. In addition to creating traditional Kyoto stone crafts and Kyoto stone lanterns using chisels and stone hammers handed down since ancient times, the workshop also produces fine stone carvings with delicate chisels. Beyond these traditional techniques, it is especially known for its unique Kyoto finishing method that gives works the appearance of natural weathering, adding a sense of timeless gravitas. This wide range of skills has also been applied to collaborations with contemporary art. Actively working with craftsmen, artists, designers, and universities, the workshop is committed to the advancement of traditional crafts. In recent years, it has exhibited and demonstrated stone lantern making, as well as developed new works in the United States, Italy, and beyond, expanding its activities across cultures and borders. 京都府亀岡市曽我部町法貴という小さな里山で1902年に創業した石工。 古来より伝わるノミや石頭等を使った京石工芸品や京燈籠の制作のほか、更に細かいノミを使用した彫刻細工も制作する。その伝統的な技法のさらにその後、得意とする「風化した様に見せる仕上げ」をすることで作品に時を経た重厚感を持たせる京都独特の伝統手法など、多彩な技は現代芸術との共同制作にも生かされている。 様々な職人やアーティスト、デザイナーや大学などと協力し伝統工芸の発展に取り組んでおり、近年においてはアメリカ合衆国及びイタリアなど世界各地にて石灯籠の展示や制作実演・新商品開発を行い、文化や国境のボーダーを超えて活躍の場を拡げている。
