ジャマイカはスピーディーな発展を遂げている反面、貧富の差が激しく、社会保障制度は発展途上にあります。ＮＰＯ法人リンコップジャジャは、貧困で孤立するジャマイカの障害者が自分の地域で認められ、社会参加して生きることを目指して支援しています。2023年から、知的障害を持つ若者が支援学校を卒業した後の受け皿を作るため「手織り」に取り組み、製品を販売し、収益を織り手に還元しています。さらには就労の機会を持たない身体障害者や、地域で出会った障害者や家族の支援なども行っています。障害を持たない人でも十分な収入を得ることが難しい状況で、障害者が自立した生活を送ることは容易ではありませんが、地域社会が支援の必要性を感じることがインクルーシブ社会に近づく一歩だと考えます。手織りなどの活動を通してジャマイカの地域社会に障害当事者の存在をアピールし、彼らが持つ可能性や魅力について知ってもらうことで、障害を持つ人やさまざまな生きづらさを持つ人たちを排除しない社会の構築に寄与することを目指して活動を続けています。

While Jamaica is undergoing rapid development, the gap between the rich and the poor remains wide, and its social welfare system is still in the process of developing. LINK UP JAJA, a non-profit organization, is dedicated to supporting persons with disabilities in Jamaica who are affected by poverty and social isolation, empowering them to gain recognition in their communities and engage actively in society. Since 2023, we have been running a hand-weaving project that welcomes young people with intellectual disabilities after they graduate from a special needs school. By selling their handcrafted products, we return a portion of the profits to the weavers to help fulfill their needs. Through this program, we strive to help build an inclusive society where people facing various challenges are welcomed and embraced and included.

生活に余裕がなく、生活に困る人も多いジャマイカで、障害がある人たちに多くのチャンスは与えられていません。国土が秋田県ほど、人口約300万人のジャマイカで、今すぐ先進国なみの社会保障を実現することは難しいかもしれませんが、地域の人を巻き込みながら障害児・者を支援することで共生社会に一歩近づくことは可能です。彼らにとってほんの少し生きやすい社会は、障害がない人たち＝子供、お年寄り、女性、何らかのマイノリティーである人たち＝にとっても生きやすい社会であるはず。ユーモア溢れ、心温かいジャマイカの人たちとのLINK UP(つながり)を大切に、インクルーシブ社会の構築を目指して、草の根レベルで活動を続けています。

In Jamaica, where many people face financial challenges, persons with disabilities are often not given sufficient opportunities. It may be difficult for Jamaica to establish a social welfare system on par with developed countries right away; however, we believe it is possible to take meaningful steps toward a more inclusive society. A society that becomes just a little easier for persons with disabilities to live in is also one that is easier for everyone else. With warmth, humor, and a deep appreciation for the vibrant people of Jamaica, we continue our grassroots efforts while valuing every LINK UP—every connection—we make.
