私は昔、インドに住んでいました。
インドに住んで3年目の8年生（日本でいう中学2年生）の時、学校でとある課題がありました。それは半年をもかけて完成させる課題で、内容はインドの人口過多により起こっている様々な問題をの中から各個人が1つ問題を選び、それを各教科の視点（社会的・数学的・科学的etc.）で研究・分析をしまとめるというものでした。
私は水に関する問題を選び、そこで初めてインドの水事情をぼんやりとした「想像」ではなく、「実状」として知りました。
火葬後の灰も下水も工業廃棄物も全て流れ出るガンジス川沿いには、その水を飲み水や生活用水として使う人たちの大きな居住地区があります。具体的な数字は忘れてしまいましたが、当時調べたガンジス川の水質はDDTという殺虫剤として使われる薬品より何倍？何十倍？の毒性を持っていました。とても大きな衝撃でした。
ただ、高校を卒業し、日本に戻り、大学へ行き、上記でも分かるようにいつしかそこで学んだ知識は消え去りその時の衝撃だけが頭の片隅にずっとある状況が何年も続いてました。それだけひどい状況と知りながら、何もしていないという罪悪感と共に。
なので、30歳の誕生日というのを言い訳に、皆様のお力を借りてこの「何もしない」状況を脱却する第一歩を踏み出せたらと思い、ウォーターエイドジャパンへバースデードネーションをすることを決めました。
もし、5月16日私と一緒にいて、一緒にお祝いをして下さるとしたら...
食事？プレゼント？ハッピーアワーでお酒を一杯？それとも、私の大好きなアイス？
これらの中のどれであれ、その金額を寄付というプレゼントに変えてお祝いして下さったらこれ程嬉しいことはありません。初めて踏み出す一歩が人頼りというのはなんとも情けないですが、私の非力さと誕生日という特別な日に免じて、ご協力頂けましたら幸いです。

When I was living in India, there was a semester long project at school called "UbD/Population Project" in 8th grade. It was about researching different kinds of issues caused by the massive population growth in India.
I chose my topic about water issue, and this was the first time where I saw the water problem as more than vague idea.
The Ganges is the biggest river in India as well as one of the most polluted in the world. When I was researching for the project, I learned that its water quality is so much more toxic than the pesticide called DDT. And yet people have gathered along the riverside to use the Ganges water for their everyday life. Including drinking water.
Though this left me in such a shock, as I moved back to Japan and live my life here, this whole thing became just a thing in the past.
But it's not.
It is still going on and it is getting worse. And I have done nothing for too long.
So this is why I've decided to start this birthday donation for WaterAid Japan, which is an organization aim to improve water and sanitary situation all around the world.
If you were to celebrate my birthday with me, would you treat me with a drink? Dinner? Get me a present? or an ice cream?
In any case, please donate that amount of money to this donation to support the water improvement.
Please take your love for me and project it to something bigger and greater in the world.
