Purpose
「花に逢はん」は、ハンセン病を罹患した伊波敏男が、差別や社会制度の矛盾と闘ってきた自らの半生を綴った記録です。
世界中が差別や偏見のない社会となるよう、これを、英訳して出版します。
"Hana ni Awan" is Toshio Iha's narrative of his leprosy experience and his battle against discrimination and societal contradictions.
We offer this English translation with the aspiration that the world will transform into a realm free from discrimination and prejudice.
Past Activities
ハンセン病回復者である理事長伊波敏男の日本語での著作である「花に逢はん」を英文でホームページで公開することにしました。
私たちは、この翻訳作業を専門家に依頼するために見積りを取ったところ、翻訳だけで600万円のお金が必要であることが分かりました。私たちにそのようなお金はないため、翻訳ソフトや学生などのボランティアの力を借りて翻訳作業を行っています。
したがって、日本語の著作と異なり、文学的表現にはなっていないかもしれません。
しかし、ハンセン病からの回復者である伊波敏男が、どのように偏見や差別と闘って来たか、また、彼と様々な人々との出会いについて、知っていただくことはできると思います。私たちは、このような事実を多くの人たちに知ってほしいと考えて、費用のかかる紙での出版は諦め、電子書籍形式でホームページ上で無料公開することにしました。
なお、公開後は、より優れた翻訳ができるボランティアの力を借りながら、また、読者の方のご指摘を頂きながら、英語の文章の見直しは行っていきます。
We have decided to publish " Meet the Flowers" by Chairman Toshio Iha, which is written in Japanese, as an English text on our website. When we requested a quote to have this work translated by experts, we found out that it would cost $40,000, which we cannot afford. As a result, we carried out the translation work with the help of volunteer efforts, including translation software and students. Therefore, unlike the Japanese original, the literary expressions may not be fully preserved.
However, we believe that through this, you can learn about Toshio Iha's experiences as a Hansen's disease survivor, his struggles against prejudice and discrimination, as well as his encounters with various individuals. We wanted to share these facts with a wide audience, so we decided to publish it on our website.
Furthermore, in the future, we will continue to revise the English text with the help of volunteers who can provide better translations, as well as taking into account feedback from our readers.
