In September, we will be highlighting the global impact of ARI’s training through the work of our graduates!
For our first story, we introduce Jonah, who is promoting environmental education through educational programmes in Namibia, southwestern Africa, where climate change poses a significant challenge.
Achieving 100% Recycling with ARI’s Learnings
Our organization, the Namib Desert Environmental Education Trust (NaDEET), aims to inspire people to understand and actively contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Each year, we host more than 800 participants through our five-day residential environmental education program, which serves primary and secondary school learners, university students, and teachers.
A principle I learned at ARI, “What you need is around you” has played a major role in helping NaDEET achieve 100% recycling at our center.
Materials once considered waste are now transformed into valuable resources. Organic waste becomes nutrient-rich compost that supports our gardens, while other materials are repurposed wherever possible.
Our thriving garden stands as a living example of our motto: “We practice what we preach.” The produce from our garden contributes directly to the meals prepared at our Education Centre, where we serve three nutritious meals daily to participants attending our residential programs.
Recently, I had an unexpected reunion. The host family who welcomed me during my Tokyo homestay at ARI travelled all the way to Namibia to visit me! Namibia is a beautiful country rich in nature. I truly hope many people will come and visit.
The seeds planted at ARI continue to grow, and their impact is only beginning to unfold.
