Why School Meals Matter

In Malawi, school is not only a place to study.

For many children, it is also a safe place to spend the day, be with friends, receive care from teachers, and eat a meal.

When food is limited at home, school lunch becomes more than food. It becomes the reason a child comes to school.

It also helps parents feel secure knowing their child will be fed and cared for during the day.

That is why Seibo has continued school meal support in Malawi since 2015. By 2025, Seibo had supported approximately 20,000 children across 55 schools, delivering about 3.4 million school meals in one year.

Reaching Children Where Support Is Hardest to Deliver

This campaign focuses on CBCCs — Community-Based Childcare Centres.

CBCCs are similar to small community nurseries or daycare centres. They are often run by local communities in areas where poverty is severe and support is difficult to reach.

During our visit to Malawi in May 2026, we saw CBCCs where children gathered every morning despite difficult conditions.

Some centres had only one small classroom.

 Some had outdoor kitchens.

 Some lacked proper toilets, wells, food storage, or cooking spaces.

 In some places, community members carried water by hand to keep the centre running.

The environment is not easy.

Still, children come.

They wash their hands.

They learn numbers and letters.

They sing, dance, draw, and wait for lunch.

Behind every CBCC are teachers, caregivers, village leaders, and parents doing their best with limited resources.

Seibo wants to support their efforts by providing the meal that helps children keep coming back.

One school meal costs about 15 yen.

It sounds small, but for a child at a CBCC, that meal can shape the day.

A school day creates a chance to learn.

A safe place gives parents peace of mind.

What is NPO Seibo?

NPO Seibo is a Japan-based nonprofit organization that supports school meal programs in Malawi, southeastern Africa.

Since 2015, Seibo has worked with local partners to deliver meals to children in nursery schools, primary schools, and CBCCs, or Community-Based Childcare Centres. These are places where children can learn, spend time safely, and receive daily care.

In Malawi, poverty and food insecurity still make it difficult for many children to keep attending school. Seibo focuses on supporting education through food because a school meal does more than fill a child’s stomach. It gives children a reason to come to school, helps parents send them with peace of mind, and supports communities caring for the next generation.

By 2025, Seibo had provided school meals to approximately 20,000 children across 55 schools, delivering about 3.4 million meals in one year.

In Japan, Seibo also works with schools, companies, and individuals through events, school programs, coffee and tea sales, and donation campaigns. These activities connect everyday action in Japan with school meals in Malawi.

Through this campaign, Seibo hopes to expand school meal support to CBCCs where children and caregivers are still waiting for consistent support.
