About Torii - holding questions

社会課題を「理解すること」や「解決すること」だけを目的にするのではなく、その問いに向き合うとき、私たち自身の内側では何が起きているのか。頭で考えていることと、身体や感覚が受け取っているもののあいだに、どんなずれや間が生まれているのか。

Toriiは、そうした“はざま”にとどまりながら、急いで答えを出そうとせずに、人と人、人と社会のあいだにある関係性をつむぎ直そうとしています。

What is happening inside us when we face social issues? How is body responding or reacting, what sensations or sense of urgency run through your body? Where does the inner voice feel stuck, what is the alignment between feeling, thought and action in you?

Torii remains as the space to explore those questions emerging in the space of between, rather than jumping into “solutions” of social issues, while we actually engage with concrete social issues such as human trafficking, refugee, human security in migration or marginalization. Because we have learned over the last decade that re-weaving the relationship with self, others and society is the pathway to transform those social issues to the past legacy. Looking into what I am reacting to, where that reactivity is coming from, what is preventing me from forming intimate collaborative relationship with other organizations is equally important to coming up with the theory of change to “solve” that concrete issue.

About “Travel Companion” - beyond the transactionary relationship of provider and receiver

Toriiでは、継続的に関わってくださる人たちを「マンスリーサポーター」ではなく、”Travel Companion（トラベルコンパニオン）”と呼んでいます。

それは、支援する人・される人という一方向の関係ではなく、同じ問いを携えながら、それぞれの場所と時間から、ともに歩く関係でありたいと考えているからです。

トラベルコンパニオンとは、活動を資金面で支える存在にとどまりません。 「この歩き方を信じて、一緒に問い続ける人がいる」という関係性に加わること。Doing（何をするか）よりも、Being（どう在るか）を大切にしながら、社会の見え方が少しずつ変わっていくプロセスに立ち会う仲間です。

We call those who feel resonated with us and empower us through providing monthly subscription fee as Travel Companion, instead of Monthly Supporter. Why? We would like to weave different relationships with those who are willing to walk this journey with us beyond monetary transactions and fixed roles of provider and receiver. Shifting the word from “monthly supporter” to “travel companion”, we plant a dream to shift the nature of our relationship with you from doing to being.

Why travel companion now? - Because Torii is at the stage to build social capital

Toriiはこれから先、事業と寄付の両輪で、社会とエクイティな関係を築いていくことを目指しています。けれど、立ち上がって間もない今、その形を完成させることよりも大切にしたいものがあります。

それは、この考え方や歩き方に共鳴し、成果を急がず、ともに時間を過ごしてくれる人たちとの関係性です。

まだ広く知られていない団体にとって、 「この問いに耳を傾けている人がいる」「この姿勢を信じて並んでくれる人がいる」そのこと自体が、組織を前に進める力になります。

トラベルコンパニオンは、短期的な支えの仕組みではありません。この関係性の土壌をいま耕していくことが、5年後、10年後もToriiが歩み続けるために欠かせないと、私たちは考えています。

Torii is planning to run the organization as a hybrid business model through business income, grants and donation in the long run, so that we will build equity-based relationship with stakeholders without repeating the pitfall of “aid business”. However, it is not possible to materialize that business model from Day 1. We feel this journey would be more fun, more meaningful and become deeper, when the journey is joined by companions. Companions who feel resonated with how Torii is, our vision, philosophy and those manifestations in our programmes. We are committed to keep the equity, dignity, solidarity and peace at the centre, and each programme will centre the voices of people with lived experience for the decision-making. And your subscription to this journey would empower Torii both financially and spirit-wise, as it shows the solidarity towards equity-based, dignity-based, solidarity-based peace in the world at this very disruptive and transition moments.

What is your merit to subscribe to Torii’s Travel Companion?

Travel Companionになることは、何かを受け取る契約でも、何かを期待される立場になることでもありません。

Toriiが大切にしたいのは、この旅の内側に、あなたの居場所がある状態です。関わり方は、人それぞれ。

忙しい時期も、立ち止まりたい時も、「ここに一緒にいる」と言える感覚を、静かに共有したいと考えています。

Gateway inside the Travel Companion is not transactional. It is the space of “being”, balancing with “doing”. Below are some of what Torii can offer to Travel Companions. Vice versa, we would like to be engaged by our Travel Companion how the space of being can be weaved with you further.

1. 旅の途中から届く記録：Zine（すべてのTravel Companionへ）

定期的に、Toriiから小さな記録が届きます。それは成果報告でも、活動紹介でもありません。

Toriiの中で交わされている思考や迷い、立ち止まり、沈黙、問いを、編集しすぎずに束ねたものです。

たとえば

• 公開されていないPodcastの断片
• Toriiを取り巻く人や風景写真と、そこに置かれた問い

忙しい日には、ぱらっと目を通すだけ。何かを理解しなくても、反応しなくても構いません。

それでも、「あなたもこの旅の途中にいる」という感覚だけが、静かに残ることを願っています。

We would like to share our “being” through video messages or Zine with all travel companions. Those are not about project or activity reporting. It is more about sharing our feelings, thoughts, actions, dilemmas, silence, questions, reflections without editing (to make it only about nice-nice things). Before we start a workshop, after we had intensive conversations with stakeholders, sceneries through Torii members’ eyes, sounds through our ears. Video messages would be kept very short, with our hope that they would flow into your daily life as the wind, flowers' fragrance or birds singing.

もし余白があるとき、もう一歩だけ近づいてみたいと思ったら、こんな場もひらいています。

• Torii Academyへの優先的周知（フィールドスタディツアー）（ ※第１回「訪問地インド」を2026年7月上旬に実施予定。参加を希望される方はお問い合わせください。）
• 少人数で集まる、クローズドな対話の時間（日本語のみ）
• Zine制作の一部に関わる機会（問いを寄せる、ひと言を書くなど）
• 年に一度の、顔が見える集まり（オンライン参加可）

どれも、「参加すること」が前提ではありません。入る／入らないは、いつでも自分で選べます。

大切にしているのは、同じ場に、同じ時間で、居合わせることです。

A various plans are in pipeline, and you are invited to those plans with priorities. Such as….

• Torii academy: we will hold Torii Academy in the field (the first one will be conducted in West Bengal, India in July 2026). Authentic, lived learning experiences, rooted in dialogue with communities facing oppression, can spark empathy, critical awareness, and collective action. And Torii Academy aims for it.
• Zine - would you like to contribute your sceneries, sounds, flavor to our Zine?
• Online gathering with ALL travel companions for conversations about each journey on equity, dignity, solidarity and peace.
