Our Challenges

Since its establishment in 2001, AIT has developed the contemporary art school MAD (Making Art Different), run an artist-in-residence program that invites domestic and international artists, curators and researchers to Tokyo, and curated various corporate art programs among others.

Based on learning pivoted on contemporary artistic expression and ideas, as well as the networks we have cultivated thus far, AIT established the dear Me project in 2016 in order to bring art to children in social care, and young people living in various environments. dear Me has created a place for children and young people to freely explore words and expression through art, as well as a place where adults can learn about social issues and collaboration between art and welfare.

Why Address This Issue

Utilizing art thinking as nutrition for the mind in order to widen the choice of children’s future.

It is said that many children in social care tend not to develop self-esteem due to their upbringing and growing environment, or due to neglect and violence from parents and adults. On the other hand, anyone in the society may experience such isolation.

dear Me considers it important that children and young people can discover more connections with the people they rely upon, that adults can discover more points of reference through its projects, and that all participants can mutually find their own words and means of communication through art. In addition, dear Me placesimportance on the sharing and exchange of these experiences with others, increasing the participants’ ability to make “realizations” and seek out easier ways of living—the power of perception—while broadening perspectives. We consider that hints for such activities can be found in the criticality and vantage points offered by art thinking and expression, which have always reflected society and the age in which it exists.
